About This Quote
The struggle of literature is in fact a struggle to escape from the confines of language. The author, in his attempt to give form to the thoughts and feelings that come to him when he writes, is led by these very thoughts and feelings to create the best possible image of reality. He speaks in such a way that his thoughts and feelings cannot be confined in words: he always has in mind the possibility that what he has written will be taken in another way and that it will mean something else. He tries to preserve himself by making himself superfluous; he does not want his readers to think what he thinks; he wants them to feel what he feels.
